jul 19, 1967 - Minneapolis riots July 19 - July 21, 1967
Description:
On the night of July 19, 1967, young blacks rebelled against an unjust power structure and set fire to storefronts. Hundreds of National Guard troops were deployed to the area. The violence lasted three nights. North Minneapolis was known as a place where marginalized people came together. The restrictive housing covenants prevented both Jewish and African American citizens from buying homes elsewhere in Minneapolis. The Northside became a safety place for residents from different backgrounds.
