Apollo 1 was a planned mission that ended in a tragedy on the launch pad. On January 27, 1967, a flash fire swept through the Command Module during a preflight test at Cape Kennedy. The disaster claimed the lives of astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee. The disaster forced NASA to redesign spacecraft safety systems and improve testing procedures. Although tragic, the lessons learned from Apollo 1 helped make later Apollo missions safer and contributed to the eventual success of the moon landing.
