Description:

On November 3rd, 1957, the Soviet Union sent a dog named Laika to space. On the capsule Sputnik 2, Laika was forced against 8 G's and shortly died afterwards. Her flight showed that a living creature could survive launch and experience space travel. This was an important step toward eventually sending humans into space and demonstrated the Soviet Union’s continued lead in the Space Race.
