The Mishnah is the first major written collection of the Oral Torah, edited by Rabbi Yehudah HaNasi around the beginning of the third century CE. It organizes Jewish law into six orders dealing with agriculture, holidays, marriage, civil law, Temple service, and purity. Jewish Encyclopedia describes Judah haNasi as the redactor of the Mishnah, and the Mishnah as the tradition developed down to the beginning of the third century CE.

After the destruction of the Second Temple and the Bar Kokhba disaster, many Jewish traditions were at risk of being forgotten, so the Oral Torah was organized into a clear legal structure. From a Jewish perspective, the Mishnah became the foundation of rabbinic Judaism and preserved the teachings of earlier sages known as the Tannaim.

Its importance comes from becoming the foundation of rabbinic Judaism after the destruction of the Second Temple. The later Gemara was built around explaining and debating the Mishnah, creating the two Talmuds.
