jan 1, 650 - Geonim Period
Description:
The Geonim were the heads of the great Jewish academies in Babylonia, especially Sura and Pumbedita. Their title, Gaon, means “genius” or “excellency.” They were considered the leading authorities of the Jewish world after the completion of the Talmud. Famous Geonim include Saadia Gaon, Sherira Gaon, and Hai Gaon.
This period is important because Jewish communities from Spain, North Africa, the Middle East, and Europe sent questions to the Geonim about Jewish law, prayer, customs, and Talmud interpretation. Their answers helped unite Jewish practice across the diaspora and preserved the authority of the Babylonian Talmud.
