jan 1, 220 - Amoraim Period
Description:
The Amoraim were the sages of the Gemara period. They studied, explained, debated, and expanded on the Mishnah. They lived mainly in two major centers of Jewish learning: the Land of Israel and Babylonia. Important Amoraim include Rav, Shmuel, Rabbi Yochanan, Resh Lakish, Rav Huna, Abaye, and Rava.
This stage produced the two Talmuds: the Jerusalem Talmud and the Babylonian Talmud. The Babylonian Talmud became especially central in Jewish law and learning. For your timeline, this period shows how Jewish life continued strongly outside the Land of Israel, especially in Babylonia, while still remaining connected to the Mishnah and earlier traditions.
