jun 5, 1956 - Sinai War
Description:
The Suez Crisis / Sinai War began after years of Egyptian hostility, fedayeen attacks from Gaza, and Egypt’s blockade of Israeli shipping through the Straits of Tiran. Israel joined Britain and France in a campaign against Egypt after Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal.
From Israel’s perspective, the war was fought to stop cross-border attacks and reopen freedom of navigation. Israel captured the Sinai Peninsula quickly but withdrew under international pressure, receiving guarantees meant to protect Israeli shipping.
