The Second Lebanon War began after Hezbollah crossed the border, killed Israeli soldiers, and kidnapped two others. Israel responded with a major campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

From Israel’s perspective, the war was about restoring deterrence and defending its northern border from an Iranian-backed militia. Although the war was criticized inside Israel for its handling, it led to a long period of relative quiet on the Lebanese border.
