On Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack against Israel. Egypt attacked across the Suez Canal, while Syria attacked the Golan Heights.

For Israel, this war is remembered as a painful but heroic struggle for survival. Despite the surprise and heavy early losses, Israel recovered militarily and pushed back. The war eventually helped lead to diplomacy with Egypt and the later Egypt-Israel peace treaty.
