jan 1, 850 BC - Mesha Stele
Description:
The Mesha Stele, also called the Moabite Stone, is a royal inscription written by Mesha, king of Moab. It describes Moab’s rebellion against the northern Kingdom of Israel after a period of Israelite domination under the dynasty of Omri. Mesha claims that Israel had oppressed Moab, but that his god Chemosh helped him defeat Israel and restore Moabite control over several towns east of the Jordan River. The inscription is important because it mentions Israel, Omri, the son of Omri and possibly the House of David depending on reconstruction of a damaged line.
