Byzantine rule began when the eastern half of the Roman Empire became increasingly Christian, especially after Constantine and later emperors. In the Land of Israel, this period brought major Christian building projects and made Jerusalem a central Christian city. For Jews, Byzantine rule was often difficult, with restrictions on Jewish life and access to Jerusalem at different times. Still, Jewish communities continued to exist in places like Galilee, where rabbinic learning remained active.
