Description:

- French people encouraged to transform their local churches into Temples of Reason*- removing christian symbols, replacing them with symbols of the revolution
- secular ceremonies*held —> largest at Notre Dame
- Paris commune ordered all churches to be close (by spring 1794, majority are closed)
- de-christianisation not regulated
- widespread vandalism
- altarpieces smashed, stained glasswindows, bonfires build out of prayer books
- priests attacked and forced to renoucne priesthood + some forced to marriage
- jacobins divided opinion
- some applauded
- Robespierre against it —> viewed as mob rule
- he also wasn’t an atheist
