The ancient Nalanda University was founded in 427 CE during the 5th century, under the reign of Emperor Kumaragupta I of the Gupta Empire. Located in present-day Bihar, India, it flourished for over 700 years as a major center of learning before being destroyed in the late 12th century, specifically around 1193 CE by Bakhtiyar Khilji.
Known as one of the world's first residential universities, attracting students from as far as Korea, Japan, China, Tibet and SEA.
