The Civil RIghts Act of 1964 ended segregation in public places and banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. This Act was first proposed by President John F. Kennedy and survived strong opposition from the southern members of Congress. It was eventually signed into law by Lyndon B. Johnson. Congress eventually expanded the Act to include other civil rights legislation, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.Added to timeline:
