Goodman and Schwerner had traveled from New York to Mississippi to help organize civil rights efforts on behalf of the CORE. James Chaney was a local that was a part of CORE. While in Mississippi, Schwerner organized a successfull black boycott of a variety store in the city of Meridian. The three men were hated by white supremacists and went missing on June 21. The bodies were found, and so were the culprits. The state of Mississippi made no arrests.
