"Then both of them are gone and the circus is ablaze, flames licking against the tents, twisting up into the rain" (Morgenstern 462).Marco goes to the circus in order to trap himself in the bonfire in order to end the game. Celia arrives just as he is about to do so and embraces him so she gets caught in the bonfire too. They both become trapped.
