Just after 6 o' clock on April 4, 1968, King was standing on a balcony of the Lorraine Motel, where he was staying with his associates, when all of a sudden, a bullet struck him in the neck. He was 39 years old. Following his death, there were riots in over 100 cities nationwide. Lyndon B. Johnson called King the "apostle of nonviolence".
