The Equal Pay Act, signed into law by John F. Kennedy was one of the first anti - discrimination laws that mentioned the gender based wage gap. Ultimately, the act made it illegal to pay men and women who were doing similar work different wages. The following year, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 strengthened the laws for gender equality.
