The Freedom Riders, who had been left unprotected as they entered the city of Montgomery, were met with by angry white protestors including women and children. In response to this violence, Attorney Robert F. Kennedy sent the Federal government a telegram telling them that it was necessary to "guarantee safe passage in interstate commerce."
