Desegregation in the south, especially places like Birmingham was hard. Traditional whites did not want to negotiate with the black people and fought hard to keep segregation. There was a famous demonstration in Birmingham that became very violent. Firefighters used strong pressured hoses on the demonstrators. The demonstrators were then arrested on of whom was King. While in jail He wrote a famous letter that explained the reasons for the demonstration.Added to timeline:
