aug 5, 1954 - Lynching of Emmett Till
Description:
Emmett Till was only 14 years old when he was killed. The young boy from Chicago was visiting his family in Mississippi and was murdered for saying “Bye baby” to a white woman while leaving the store. He was unaware that it was not socially okay to do this down south. The murderers were found not guilty even when his uncle testified against them. Emmett's mother decided to have an open casket at his funeral to show everyone what the racist murders had done to her son in hopes of fueling change.
