aug 19, 1792 - Lafayette defects to Austria
Description:
Had opposed the growing radical revolution. Dismissed on 17 Aug. Rather than return to Paris (risking trial as a traitor alongside the king), he defected to the Austrians on 19 August — who imprisoned him until 1797.
Significance ▾
Reputation destroyed — seen as having sided with the king at Varennes and having enabled Austrian invasion by defecting. Danton criticised him. Confirmed fears that even leading generals might betray the Revolution. Increased paranoia about 'enemies within'.
