aug 10, 1792 - Storming of the Tuileries

Description:

Tocsin sounded (emergency). ~30,000 sans-culottes + National Guard units from radical sections + Fédérés marched on and stormed the Tuileries. 1,000 Swiss Guards defended the palace — soldiers loyal to the king. Swiss Guard chased down and butchered by the mob. Louis fled via secret passage to the LA, but deputies couldn't protect him — rioters invaded the assembly.

Rioters demanded: king's imprisonment; recognition of the new revolutionary Commune; election of a new assembly.

Fall of the monarchy: royal family imprisoned in Temple Prison; king's authority rejected; end of 1791 Constitution and constitutional monarchy.

Fall of the LA: uprising rejected its authority; deputies who supported constitutional monarchy fled/hid; more moderate elements removed; remaining deputies increasingly radical. Dissolved Sep. 1792.

Rise of popular/revolutionary power: Insurrectionary Commune now hugely influential; sans-culottes proved they could use violence to force change. LA appointed Danton minister of justice — introduced radical laws (arrest + deportation of refractory priests, sale of all émigré land). Universal male suffrage introduced for new National Convention → republic instead of monarchy.

Radicalisation: early moderate phase of revolution collapsed; political violence normalised; leads directly to September Massacres + more extreme revolutionary measures.
