Description:

Albert of Hohenzollern, who had already held two bishoprics, was offered the Archbishopric of Mainz; had to raise 10,00-0 ducats, so he borrowed the money from the great banking family of the age (the Fuggers); to pay off the papacy granted him permission to raise money from the preaching of indulgence, with half of the money going directly to Rome, where the papacy was in the midst of program to finally complete St. Peter's Basilica; Johann Tetzel was sent to preach the indulgence throughout Germany
