BUT: firm in that privileges of 1st + 2nd estates remain
National Assembly was void —> 3 estates should continue to meet separately
Attempted to dismiss estates to their separate meetings:
Third Estate deputies refused to leave the hall (oath)
The Comte de Mirabeau (a noble representing the Third Estate) —> “if you have been
instructed to expel us from here, you must ask for orders to use force, as only the power of
bayonets can drive us from our seats.”
Next day: 1st + 2nd estate deputies join —> defiance of the king
Louis realised he had little choice
—> ordered remaining deputies of 1st + 2nd estates to join 3rd —> National Assembly now legitimate!
