- king did not pass the august decrees + the declaration of the rights of man
- against the queen (was greatly disliked)
- **20,000 soldiers around Versailles**
- increasing military presence
- led by Lafayette
- **King agrees to open food stores and promises to pass august decrees + sign declaration**
- he is trying to get women on his side —> nervous, waiting it out and trying to win support / sympathy
- he had a long history of stalling, delaying his promises
- the issue is the more r**adical women dont believe him** and they want to kill Marie Antoinette (not going to keep his promise)
- they try to **sneak into palace to find her** (end up killing a guard)
- they didn’t find her
- to prove he is on their side **king goes to Paris**
- act of solidarity with the people
- king is now a **prisoner** —> he is vulnerable and surrounded by opposition (under surveillance and is surrounded by national guard)
