April 1961 - Electoral Alliance (against CUT) between Juvento and Union Démocratique de Peuples Togolais. In April 1961as the CUT began cracking down on all sources of oppositionSantos forged an alliance between the Juvento and the northern parties in the country (see MOUVEMENT NATIONALISTE TOGOLAIS-JUVENTO), which was disqualified from competing against the CUT in that year's elections. Shortly thereafter Togo became a de facto one party state, and Santos and all other opposition leaders were imprisoned under harsh conditions in Sansanné-Mango in the far north.
