oct 31, 1289 - Thorne Starfield turns 13 years old and creates The Thorn Network of the Starfield Family to keep everyone connected.
Description:
The Thorn Network of the Starfield Lineage | Classification: Communication Magic | Originator: Thorne Starfield | Era of Use: Late 13th Century until the Crystal Invention Era (1357 onward) | Region: Grikonis Island | Long before the invention of crystal-based communication devices by the twin inventors Telepharè Starfield and Udrusin Thewynn Starfield, the Starfield family relied on a living system of magical communication known as The Thorn Network. The system was created by Thorne Starfield, a gargoyle-born master of acanthokinesis, the manipulation and generation of thorns and spined plant matter. Among his many abilities was a rare talent known as thorn communion, allowing him to perceive and transmit sensations through connected plant structures. Recognizing the usefulness of this gift, Thorne cultivated a vast underground web of enchanted roots and thorns beneath Grikonis Island. From this living network he grew small, durable thorn fragments that remained magically connected to the greater root system. Members of the Starfield family would carry these thorns with them at all times. They were typically worn as:
• cloak pins
• brooches
• woven charms
• leather strap clasps
• necklace pendants
Each thorn acted as a living relay node connected to the central root network maintained by Thorne.
When a family member wished to send a message, they would speak softly into the thorn or press it between their fingers while focusing their thoughts. The thorn would carry the vibrations through the underground root system, where they would travel through the network and emerge from another connected thorn worn by a distant relative. Messages were received in several ways depending on the sensitivity of the receiver:
• a faint whisper resembling rustling leaves
• a gentle vibration against the skin
• a subtle prickling sensation signaling an incoming message
Many Starfields described the experience as “hearing the forest speak.” The Thorn Network allowed the family to communicate silently across long distances throughout Grikonis Island without the use of written letters or magical projection spells. Because the network was biologically bound to Thorne himself, it could not be intercepted or understood by outsiders. For several generations the system served as the primary communication method of the Starfield lineage. Decline of the Thorn Network In the year 1357, the technological landscape of the family changed dramatically with the birth of the twins Telepharè Starfield and Udrusin Thewynn Starfield. Gifted with crystallokinesis, airwave manipulation, and contraption creation, the twins eventually developed advanced crystal-based communication devices capable of transmitting voices, images, and recorded memories. These inventions made the Thorn Network largely obsolete. Despite this, many elder members of the Starfield family continued to wear their thorns out of tradition and respect for the system that once united the family across the island. Even in later centuries, it remains common for Starfields to wear a single thorn pinned to their cloak. Not as a tool of necessity. But as a symbol of their living history. Historical Note Scholars of Grikonian history occasionally question how the Starfield family communicated before the birth of Thorne Starfield. No official record answers this question. Most family historians simply leave a brief annotation in the margins of their texts:
"Do not ask how they communicated before Thorne."
