oct 10, 1997 - The Magnum Opus

Description:

"1997, The Great Flutist of Old Oakburn announces the completion of his Magnum Opus. A presentation is set to happen Friday at Lake Oakburn. Hundreds of men, women and children gather at the lake in anticipation. The morning after, Old Oakburn woke up to silence. One Thousand and Forty-Three inhabitants disappeared overnight."

"Long after the wraithful times, when the serpent's tongue no longer hissed. The drowned artist, Marvpyas, rises. Risen from the pungent water, carrying the darkness of those eldritch depths, tenebrae aeternae. A burning ember boils within the dark fire, maligini servant to a certain viper's sin. Dies irae, a trade, a price was paid. His kin, spared from the gloom in the lake and now his flesh in torment laid. 'Rise', a call beyond the veil. Roaming the last ring. 'Face the fire, peccatum tuum', his wail. Marvpyas descended the mountain's height forever white and glamorous, seeking the land of light. The city of snow, where once two miracles were born from divine glow. The people of the city, at the florid orange sunrise, were to soon regret their pity. For the wind hid fangs, and the maw of the drowned city opened under his arcane chants - to swallow the accursed soil, 'Roar the fire from nine circles! And let the water boil!' And he will drown them, ad tenebris, into the drowned city, the gloom of the lake, the forever breathing necropolis."
-The Book of Marvpyas II

"Time didn't heal a thing. All 1,043 residents of Old Oakburn disappeared overnight. As hope of ever finding them withered, the people built cenotaphs: Stone memorials raised in the mountains. As their names disappeared from our conversations, another monolith is built in their memory. [December 3rd, 2003], there are 900 centogaphs. Yesterday, two more were built, for among the 1,043 missing are my wife and daughter, Catherine and Ashley Carter. As hope faded, people turned to their own illusions and conformity. They moved on, as we often do, but I can't conform. We all felt the wind shift uncannily that night, and we all dreamt of those symbols. Something took them, a call on the wind. But I fear my strength is failing, and I will never stare into those empty graves again."
-Anthony Carter, six years later
