The Soviet Union exploded the first atomic bomb on August 29, 1949. The soviet union exploded it in Kazakhstan, at a test sight. This began the nuclear arms race between the United States and the Soviet Union. On September 3, 1949, the U.S. air force was flying over the Atlantic, and detected radio active particles. One month later the Harry S. Truman the current president at that time announced the first atomic bomb had been built by the Soviet Union. There was never a clear winner on who won the nuclear arms race.
