The revolution capitalized on the widespread public discontent and a series of demonstrations, starting with a student march on November 17, 1989. On November 27th, during which the people had demanded free elections and an end to one-party rule. The communist authorities were forced to negotiate with the opposition. As a result, a transition government incorporating members of the Civic Forum and Public Against Violence was formed.
