jun 25, 1950 - The Korean War - Kieran

Description:

The Korean War was a conflict between North Korea and South Korea that became a crucial part of the Cold War. It began on June 25th, 1950, when the North first invaded the South, trying to reunify Korea, which had been divided at the 38th parallel in 1945, under communist rule. Both sides were funded by prominent countries with different government systems, highlighting the battle between Communism and Democracy.

The war was extremely violent, and about 2.5 million people lost their lives, including both soldiers and civilians. The fighting ranged all over Korea, but the most prominent fighting was located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, with neither side gaining a permanent advantage. In July 1953, almost exactly two years later, an armistice was signed that ended the fighting but not officially the war. Korea remained divided at almost the same boundaries as before. The Korean War showed how the Cold War was often fought indirectly, with major powers supporting opposing sides, without directly going to war with each other.
