On August 13, 1961, the Berlin wall was built by the German Democratic Republic. It was built between east and west Berlin, mainly to reduce the traffic from East to West. The goal was to minimize and stabilize the immigration. It took thousands of East German soldiers. On November 9, 1989, the leader of the East German Communist Party declared that the citizens of East Germany should be allowed to cross the border whenever they wanted.
