In 1961, President John Kennedy declared to send the first man to the moon. Five years later, on July 20, 1996, Neil Armstrong took the first steps on the moon. The race to the moon was between the United States and the Soviet Union. The technology to get a man on the moon had to be advanced, so both the US and the Soviet Union believed if you had rocket technology you would also have advanced warfare technology. This created the space race.
