mar 21, 1847 - Bremen Mission arrives at shores of Eweland
Description:
Bremen Mission founded Ewe Evangelical Church (that's why 50% of all Southern Togolese Christians are protestants whilst the majority of French West African Christians are Catholics)
(Photo around 1899)
Skinner: Although four Bremen mission stations were constructed in the 1850s, Werner Ustorf has emphasised the painfully slow progress of the missionaries, who achieved just fourteen conversions in their first decade of evangelistic endeavour. The difficulties in converting free Africans contributed to missionary interest in the manumission of slave children, and approximately one hundred such children were purchased, ‘liberated’, and converted in the period between 1857 and 1868.
