sep 29, 2007 - recovery
Description:
Remote Location: The recovery site was deep within a remote, crocodile- and insect-infested swamp, requiring extensive logistical planning to access and set up equipment.
Environmental Obstacles: Salvage teams had to contend with the swampy terrain itself, including deep silt and rotted vegetation that had accumulated around the fuselage over 64 years.
Lifting Logistics: A major challenge was using inflatable airbags to lift the heavy, waterlogged aircraft without damaging it further or having the bags slip out from underneath. A specialized technique of filling part of the bag with water first was developed to provide stability during the lift.
Disassembly and Transport: The plane had to be carefully disassembled into major components (wings, engines, tail) and then air-lifted by helicopter to a staging area for transport by sea to the United States.
Political and Legal Hurdles: The recovery was fraught with controversy, involving complex negotiations with international agencies and the Papua New Guinean government regarding ownership and export permits, as some locals believed the plane should remain as a war memorial
