sep 1, 1535 - End of Second Voyage

Description:

Later in September of 1535, he sailed downriver to what is now Montreal. Cartier was welcomed there by the Iroquois that controlled the area. Hearing from the tribe that there were other rivers that led farther west, that contained the gold, silver, copper and spices that they wished to find. Before they could continue, though, the harsh winter blew in, and the rapids made the river rough, and Cartier and his men managed to anger the Iroquois because they had to wait until spring to leave.
And Cartier did, in fact leave in the spring. But he didn't leave until he had captured some of the Iroquois chiefs. When he returned to France he could only report about the riches he had yet to find farther west.
