oct 9, 2025 - (ITALY) Stadler to build Sicily’s first hydrogen trains for Mount Etna line
Description:
Stadler will deliver Sicily’s first hydrogen-powered trains, expanding its zero-emission footprint in Italy with a new contract for Ferrovia Circumetnea, with its rolling stock headed for Mount Etna.
Stadler has signed a contract with Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE) for the design and supply of two narrow-gauge hydrogen-powered trains for Sicily, marking the Swiss manufacturer’s first hydrogen project in the region. The deal was signed last week at EXPO Ferroviaria in Milan and includes an option for 13 additional units, plus five years of full service and technical spare parts.
The new vehicles will be designed and built at Stadler’s Bussnang plant in Switzerland and are intended for the Paternò–Randazzo route, which winds through the Etna Nature Park on the slopes of Mount Etna. Each two-car trainset features a central “Power Pack” containing the hydrogen tanks and fuel cells, offering 87 seats and space for up to 147 passengers. Accessibility features include low-floor entry, a universal PRM toilet, and areas for bicycles and pushchairs.
