Robert Fulton developed the first commercially successful steamboat, The North River Steamboat of Clermont. It later took passengers from New York City to Albany and back. Steamboats presented merchants with the ability to easily transport goods both up and down rivers. After the creation of the steamboat, port cities flourished more than ever before.
