mar 14, 1794 - The patent for Eli Whitney's cotton gin was granted.
Description:
The cotton gin allowed for cotton to become the new cash-crop of the south.
The cotton gin drastically increased the amount of cotton that could be produced on plantations. For several decades after 1800, the yield of raw cotton doubled. The cotton gin also promoted the need for slaves to grow cotton and fueled the slave trade in the 19th century.
