In 1578 the three remaining ships of his convoy traveled to the southern tip of south america, weeks later he finally reached the pacific. Unfortunately a violent storm passed through and destroyed one of the three ships. Drake eventually was pushed south and discovered a island and named it Elizabeth island.Source-
