mar 1, 1524 - Verrazzano and his crew meet Native Americans

Description:

On March first, Verrazzano nears Cape Fear. From here, he is convinced he can hear the Pacific ocean. In a letter to the King of France, he says he believes he is near to China, creating yet another misconception about north america on contemporary maps.
Continuing the coast northwards, Verrazzano and his crew come in contact with Native Americans living on the coast. He didn't notice the Chesapeake bay entrances or the mouth to the Delaware river.
In the New York Bay he encountered the Lenape people and observed a "large lake" which was the entrance to the Hudson River.
