apr 1, 1182 - Massacre of the Latins (1182)
Description:
As favorability of catholic and latin traders had risen in the empire under Manuel I and then Alexios II's mother, so had anti-Latin sentiment. Fueled by economic jealousy and religious division, and sparked by the anti-Latin Andronikos claiming regency, a mass riot against Latins occurred in April 1182. This event decimated the established quarters of Venice, Genoa, and Pisa, already a century old.
