Description:
As Manuel I expanded the favorable relations with the Pisans and Genoans that Alexios I had begun at the end of his reign, relations with the Venetians grew tense. The Venetians were bitter rivals of the other Italian trading empires, and felt their relationship with Byzantium should be exclusive. Conflict between the Italian quarters of the city was frequent, and after a particulary brutal raid of the Genoan quarter by the Venetians, Manuel I order the arrest and confistication of property of all Venetians in the empire, some 20,000 people.
