may 30, 1959 - 1959 Elections

Description:

Singapore was divided into 51 constituencies and for the first time, people could elect representatives to all the seats in the Legislative Assembly.

The Citizenship Ordinance enabled many to become Singaporeans and vote. Compulsory voting was introduced.

The LF, renamed Singapore People's Alliance (SPA) performed poorly due to the unhappiness of Chinese voters over how Lim Yew Hock handled the Chinese Middle School Student Riots.

The PAP had a landslide victory.
