apr 2, 1955 - 1955 Elections

Description:

The 1955 Elections were much more interesting to people as they were encouraged by the greater degree of self-government. Eligible voters were automatically registered instead of having to register themselves, making it easier to vote.

Parties that contested:
Labour Front
People's Action Party
Singapore Progressive Party
Alliance Party
Democratic Party
Independents

LF:
Led by David Marshall
PAP:
Led by Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Keng Swee, Dr Toh Chin Chye, S. Rajatnam, Kenneth Michael Byme

The SPP were criticised for their inability to push for self-government and for being too pro-British

The LF formed a coalition to head the government and David Marshall became the first chief minister. But the Governer and his British officials did not see Marshall as a true leader since his government was anchored by a party comitted to ending colonial rule.
