mar 20, 1948 - 1948 Elections (First)

Description:

In a bid to win local support, the British held an election in 1948 to give people a say in the representatives of the Legislative Council (6 out of 22 seats)

Participation was low as recent immigrates were not allowed to vote as they were not born in Britain or British colonies.

Singapore Progressive Party (SPP) contested and won 3 out of 6 seats.

The SPP was led by Tan Chye Cheng, John Laycock, and Nazir Ahmad Mallal. They believed in self government.
