Dieulacres Abbey establishes a grange at Westwood, one mile west of the town. Westwood Grange consists of 2 carucates (a carucate is as much land as a team of oxen could plough in one season) worth £1 year, plus 6s. 8d. year from the sale of meadow. The Abbey farmed out the manor of Leek for £10 6s. 4d. The right to insist that burgesses use the Earl’s mill is valued at £1. Leek church with its dependent chapel (either Horton or Ipstones) is valued at £28
