jan 1, 1420 - Giovanni Fontana’s Clockwork and Wind-Powered Carriage Proposals – c.1420, Italy
Description:
Giovanni (Johannes) Fontana’s “Bellicorum instrumentorum liber” (c.1420s) offers visionary sketches of self-propelled vehicles, including wind-powered land carts, spring-driven automata, and possibly clockwork-propelled wagons. Though profoundly imaginative, Fontana’s drawings were often more theoretical or whimsical than practical: some vehicles are depicted with sails and complex gearing, while others propose propulsion via tightly wound rope, springs, or even firepower. Fontana’s treatise encodes its descriptions in cipher, adding an aura of secrecy and science fiction to his contraptions.
These works signal the revived scientific curiosity and experimentation characteristic of Renaissance Italy. Yet, they remained inspirational rather than actionable, serving to whet intellectual appetites for problems of force, transmission, and control which would not fully resolve for centuries.
