jan 1, 406 - Crossing of the Rhine
Description:
In 406, a massive coalition of Germans gathered near Maguncia (Mainz) on the Rhine including the Suebi, Vandals, Burgundians, and Alans. They hailed from farther inland and had been fleeing the Huns.
The area was occupied by Franks who fought with the Vandals. The Franks were defeated by the united gathering of tribes but they were left starving.
Desperate, the tribes crossed in the middle of winter whilst the western Roman army was fighting Alaric in Italy.
The three groups marched through Gaul and pillaged over 20 cities and fortresses making their way to Iberia by 409.
